This friendly17th century country inn, now a well-established 'restaurant - with - rooms' has many historic associations. For instance the Jacobean oak panelling in the dark - beamed bar has recently been authenticated as coming from nearby Houghton House. Named after the Conquest family who lived in the manor house from the 13th. to the 18th. century the village is ideally placed for business and leisure pursuits in the Mid. Bedfordshire area. (for more information on local history click on 'More About' below) Situated just off the A6, 5 miles south of Bedford, it is convenient for Luton Airport, the M1 Junctions 12/13 and both Flitwick and Bedford railway station. The Greensand Ridge runs just above the village and a way marked footpath -The Greensand Ridge Walk - follows its route for some 40 miles from Gamlingay in the east to Leighton Buzzard in the west. A mile across the fields or two miles by road are the picturesque ruins of 17th century Houghton House, John Bunyan's House Beautiful in Pilgrim's Progress. Also across the fields is the ancient broadleaved woodland of Kingswood, and Glebe Meadows with their wealth of wild flowers. English Heritage's Wrest Park, Woburn House with its fine stately home, Safari Park & Golf Course, The Shuttleworth Collection of old aeroplanes and The Swiss Gardens at Ickwell are all within easy reach.
