Horsham is a thousand-year-old Saxon market town that has benefited from many changes in the past twenty-five years. Most recently it has undergone an award winning refurbishment of the historic Carfax area of the town centre. In the summer, glorious floral displays, ample seating and the mock Victorian streetlights make this pleasant area, with musical entertainment from the bandstand on many Saturday afternoons.
Leading from the Carfax are several shopping areas, including Piries Place and Swan Walk. The latter is a mall with many well-known stores. It has an attractive swan mosaic set in the tiled floor and a 'Flying Swans' bronze water feature.
A Saturday market takes place in Market Square, and occasional markets in other areas of the town centre.
Many of the buildings in the Carfax are several hundred years old. The Old Town Hall, which is over 300 years old, stands in Market Square at the head of The Causeway.
